Why Türkiye must design its own chips, and how a fabless team does it
Chip design defines who controls a product. A look at the fabless model, the path from architecture to tape-out, and what it takes to design competitive chips from Teknopark İstanbul.
Semiconductors sit inside every defence system, vehicle, satellite and phone. Yet the most valuable part of the chip business is not the factory. It is the design. Whoever designs the chip defines its function, owns its intellectual property and decides who can buy it.
The fabless model
Most chip companies today are fabless: they design chips and have them manufactured by foundries. This model lets a focused engineering team compete globally without building a multi-billion-dollar fab. At Lorentis we work with X-FAB and TSMC for manufacturing, coordinate packaging, assembly and test with qualified partners, and use design access through imec and EuroCDP.
From idea to packaged chip
- Architecture and specification: deciding what the chip must do, and what it must never do.
- RTL design and verification: writing the logic and proving it correct before a single wafer is made.
- FPGA prototyping: running the design on an FPGA to test it in a real system.
- Synthesis, design-for-test and tape-out with the foundry.
- Packaging, assembly and test through partners, then qualification.
A country that cannot design its own chips cannot fully own its technology. Türkiye needs companies that think in decades, not quarters. Lorentis is built to be one of them.Mustafa Kaykısız, CEO & Co-founder, Lorentis Electronics
FPGA first, ASIC when it pays off
Many programmes start on FPGAs and move to an ASIC when volumes, power or security justify it. As an Altera Design Partner with ASIC experience, Lorentis helps customers choose the right moment. Explore our FPGA and ASIC design services.
