FPGA IP cores for resilient links: inside LDPC and OFDM

Robust wireless links depend on two building blocks: forward error correction and multicarrier modulation. Here is why LDPC and OFDM cores matter, and why they belong in hardware.

Every datalink, from a drone’s video downlink to a satellite modem, must survive noise, fading and interference. Two technologies do most of that work: forward error correction, which lets the receiver repair corrupted bits, and OFDM, which spreads data across many subcarriers so the link keeps working in difficult channels.

LDPC: repairing errors without asking again

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes add carefully structured redundancy. The receiver runs an iterative belief-propagation decoder that passes messages between check nodes and variable nodes until the data converges. LDPC performs close to the theoretical limit, which is why modern standards rely on it.

OFDM: many slow carriers instead of one fast one

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing divides the channel into many narrow subcarriers processed with FFT and IFFT. Synchronization and channel estimation let the receiver undo multipath distortion, which is essential for mobile platforms.

Why FPGA hardware

  • Deterministic low latency for real-time video and control.
  • Throughput that software-defined processors struggle to reach at low power.
  • Reuse: a verified core drops into new products and shortens development.
