Counter-drone defence in layers: detect, identify, defeat
Small drones are cheap, numerous and hard to stop. Effective counter-UAS systems combine radar, electro-optics, RF sensing and jamming into one layered chain.
Small drones have changed the threat picture for military bases, borders, energy infrastructure and public events. They are inexpensive, easy to modify and often fly low and slow, exactly where traditional air defence is weakest.
Why one sensor is never enough
Every sensor has blind spots. Radar can see a small drone at range but may confuse it with a bird. Cameras identify well but need to be pointed. RF sensors detect the control link but not every drone uses one. A reliable counter-UAS system fuses them.
The three layers
- Detect: radar and RF sensing find the object and track it.
- Identify: EO/IR cameras with real-time image processing confirm what it is and whether it is a threat.
- Defeat: RF jamming disrupts the control and navigation links, forcing the drone to land or return, without kinetic effects.
The winning counter-drone system is not the one with the loudest jammer. It is the one that connects radar, camera and jammer into a single decision in seconds.Mustafa Kaykısız, CEO & Co-founder, Lorentis Electronics
